Baltimore bulk trash, explained

Municipal bulk pickup is real, it is useful, and it is not always the right tool. Here is how the Baltimore City and Baltimore County programs work, what they exclude, and where a hauler fits.

Start with the free option

If your job is one or two items already sitting at the curb and you can wait for an appointment window, the municipal program is usually the cheapest path. We would rather tell you that than sell you a truck you do not need.

Baltimore City residential program

  • Residential curbside bulk collection is by appointment, not on demand.
  • There is a per-appointment item limit — a full cleanout will exceed it.
  • Items must be at the curb by the required time or the appointment is missed.
  • Mattresses, appliances and furniture each count against the item limit.
  • Household hazardous waste is excluded and needs a designated drop-off.

Baltimore County residential program

  • Baltimore County residents use scheduled bulk pickup or county drop-off centers.
  • Drop-off centers accept many items the curbside program will not.
  • Appliance metal and scrap are recycled separately from mixed waste.
  • Proof of county residency is generally required at drop-off sites.
  • Contractor and renovation debris is not accepted through residential programs.

Program details, item limits and eligibility change. Always confirm the current rules with the Baltimore City Department of Public Works or the Baltimore County Bureau of Solid Waste Management before scheduling around them.

Where municipal pickup stops working

Four situations account for nearly every call we get after someone tried the free route first.

The item is not at the curb

Curbside programs do not come inside. A sleeper sofa on a third-floor rowhome walk-up is a labor problem, and labor is the part municipal collection does not cover.

The volume exceeds the item cap

A garage, basement or estate cleanout is dozens of items. Splitting it across months of appointments usually costs more in time than one documented pickup.

You cannot wait

Settlement dates, rental turnovers and listing photos do not move for an appointment window. Same-day service is subject to availability, service area and final quote confirmation.

You need documentation

Landlords, executors and property managers need photo evidence of what left the property. Municipal collection does not produce a record you can file.

What nobody can take

This list is the same for the city, the county and every licensed hauler including us.

Prohibited and hazardous

  • Liquid paint, stains and solvents
  • Gasoline, oil, antifreeze and propane tanks
  • Pesticides and pool chemicals
  • Asbestos and lead-containing debris
  • Medical and biohazard waste
  • Ammunition and explosives

These require a household hazardous waste drop-off event or a licensed abatement contractor. If any of it shows up in your quote media, it gets flagged before scheduling.
