BALTIMORE–WASHINGTON METRO · SAME-DAY AVAILABILITY

Pickup time requires confirmed crew availability

Free guide

Bulk trash pickup, city by city

Every jurisdiction in the Baltimore–Washington metro handles large items differently, and most of them will take a couple of things for free. Start here, use the free option when it fits, and hire a crew only when it does not.

Pick your city or county

Each page covers how the local program works, what it will never take, the local access realities we run into, and the point where hiring a crew is cheaper in total than four collection appointments.

Baltimore City bulk trash rules

Baltimore City runs a residential bulk-item collection program through the Department of Public Works. It is the right first call for one or two items you can get to the curb yourself. It is the wrong call for a rowhome full of furniture, and this page is honest about which is which.

Baltimore County bulk trash rules

Baltimore County handles large items through a mix of scheduled residential collection and county drop-off centers. If you own a truck and a free Saturday, the drop-off route is genuinely cheap. If you have a garage full of decades, that Saturday turns into four of them.

Washington, DC bulk trash rules

DC Department of Public Works collects bulk items for the households it services — which is a narrower group than most residents assume. If you live in a larger apartment or condo building, your trash is handled privately, and the city bulk program is probably not available to you at all.

Montgomery County bulk trash rules

Montgomery County runs scheduled bulk collection along with separate scrap-metal and yard-trim streams, and which service applies depends on where you live inside the county. For a single item on a normal week, the county route is hard to beat on price. For a downtown condo on a deadline, it is not the route at all.

Howard County bulk trash rules

Howard County offers scheduled bulk collection for the households it services, and Columbia adds a second layer: your village association usually has an opinion about anything visible from the street. That combination is why so many Columbia jobs become scheduled pickups instead of curb sets.

Anne Arundel County bulk trash rules

Anne Arundel County pairs scheduled residential bulk collection with a county convenience-center and landfill drop-off option. Around Glen Burnie most homes have a driveway, so a DIY run is realistic — right up until the item is heavy, the truck is not yours, or the pile is a whole garage.

Prince George's County bulk trash rules

In Prince George's County, whether the county or your municipality collects your bulk items depends on where you live — Hyattsville, College Park and other incorporated towns run their own services. Checking which applies to your address is the first step, and this page is where the comparison to hiring a crew starts.

The four things every program has in common

Rules differ by jurisdiction. These constraints do not.

Curbside only

No municipal crew comes inside for the item. If it is still on the third floor, the labor is the job — and labor is the part free collection does not include.

Item caps

Programs limit items per collection. A garage or estate cleanout means multiple appointments across weeks, which usually costs more in time than one pickup.

Appointment windows

Collection is scheduled, not on demand. Settlement dates, listing photos and lease ends do not move for it. Same-day service is subject to availability, service area and final quote confirmation.

No documentation

Landlords, executors and property managers need proof of what left a property. Municipal pickup produces no record you can file.

What nobody can take

Same list for every city, every county and every licensed hauler including us.

Prohibited and hazardous

  • Liquid paint, stain and solvents
  • Gasoline, motor oil, antifreeze and propane tanks
  • Pesticides, pool and cleaning chemicals
  • Asbestos and lead-containing debris
  • Medical, biohazard and sharps waste
  • Ammunition and explosives

These need a designated household hazardous waste drop-off or a licensed abatement contractor. If any of it appears in your quote media, it gets flagged before scheduling.
