Bulk trash guide

Washington, DC bulk trash pickup

DC Department of Public Works collects bulk items for the households it services — which is a narrower group than most residents assume. If you live in a larger apartment or condo building, your trash is handled privately, and the city bulk program is probably not available to you at all.

How the Washington, DC program works

Program details, item limits and eligibility change. Always confirm the current rules with the DC Department of Public Works before scheduling around them.

What to expect and verify

  • DPW collects for the households it serves; larger buildings typically use private collection instead — confirm your building's status first.
  • Bulk collection is requested and scheduled rather than picked up on demand.
  • There are limits on items per collection; verify the current number on the DPW page.
  • Items must be placed where and when DPW directs, which is not always the front curb.
  • Regulated, hazardous and construction material is excluded.

What the program will not take

  • Liquid paint, stain and solvents
  • Gasoline, motor oil, antifreeze and propane tanks
  • Pesticides, pool chemicals and cleaning chemicals
  • Asbestos, lead debris and other regulated materials
  • Medical, biohazard and sharps waste
  • Tires beyond posted limits, in most programs

What actually happens on Washington, DC jobs

This part is from our own work in the market, not from a rulebook.

Local realities

  • In most DC apartment and condo buildings the real gatekeeper is the building: freight-elevator windows, dock reservations and insurance paperwork.
  • Trash rooms and shared hallways are usually off limits for a mattress or sofa, so it has to leave the building the same trip.
  • Alley loading is common and often the only viable route for a truck.
  • Historic-district stairwells in Capitol Hill and Georgetown are narrower than modern furniture assumes.

When hiring a crew is the better call

If none of these apply to your job, use the free program. We would rather be honest than sell you a truck you do not need.

Hire a hauler when

  • Your building is privately serviced and DPW bulk collection is not an option.
  • The building requires a reserved elevator window and a certificate of insurance.
  • The item cannot legally sit in a hallway, trash room or the alley overnight.
  • You are on a lease-end, settlement or listing deadline.

What you get that curbside cannot give you

  • In-home removal — nothing has to reach the curb first.
  • One visit for the whole job instead of item-capped appointments.
  • Photo documentation of the property before and after.
  • Metal recycling, donation routing where accepted, and a weighed transfer-station ticket on debris loads.
