Bulk trash guide

Montgomery County bulk trash pickup

Montgomery County runs scheduled bulk collection along with separate scrap-metal and yard-trim streams, and which service applies depends on where you live inside the county. For a single item on a normal week, the county route is hard to beat on price. For a downtown condo on a deadline, it is not the route at all.

How the Montgomery County program works

Program details, item limits and eligibility change. Always confirm the current rules with the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection before scheduling around them.

What to expect and verify

  • Bulk collection is scheduled in advance; service details vary by collection district — check the county page for yours.
  • Scrap metal and appliances are often handled as a separate collection from general bulk.
  • Item limits per collection apply; verify the current number before planning around it.
  • Material must be set out as directed and only within the allowed window.
  • Renovation and contractor debris is not part of the residential program.

What the program will not take

  • Liquid paint, stain and solvents
  • Gasoline, motor oil, antifreeze and propane tanks
  • Pesticides, pool chemicals and cleaning chemicals
  • Asbestos, lead debris and other regulated materials
  • Medical, biohazard and sharps waste
  • Tires beyond posted limits, in most programs

What actually happens on Montgomery County jobs

This part is from our own work in the market, not from a rulebook.

Local realities

  • Downtown Silver Spring and Bethesda high-rises run on service elevators and dock windows, not curbs.
  • Postwar single-family homes off Colesville Road often have a tight side-door exit rather than a wide front entry.
  • Metro-adjacent buildings limit how long a truck can occupy a loading zone, so loads go out in one pass.
  • Basement finish tear-outs here are heavy — concrete, tile and plaster — and weight, not volume, drives the disposal cost.

When hiring a crew is the better call

If none of these apply to your job, use the free program. We would rather be honest than sell you a truck you do not need.

Hire a hauler when

  • You live in a building where the curb is not a real option.
  • The pickup has to line up with a new-appliance or new-bed delivery day.
  • The job is a basement, garage or estate cleanout rather than a couple of items.
  • The load is dense demo material that needs a weighed transfer-station ticket.

What you get that curbside cannot give you

  • In-home removal — nothing has to reach the curb first.
  • One visit for the whole job instead of item-capped appointments.
  • Photo documentation of the property before and after.
  • Metal recycling, donation routing where accepted, and a weighed transfer-station ticket on debris loads.
